Split Pea and Ham Soup

Split Pea and Ham Soup is a hearty delicious easy recipe. This is the way we finish off a pre-sliced ham. After carving off most of the meat, we throw the ham bone in a pot and make this recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ham bone or a smoked ham hock
  • 2 1/2 cups split peas, washed and sorted (look for rocks)
  • 2 quarts water
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 ribs of celery, chopped
  • 2 carrots, grated
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp freshly ground pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

DIRECTIONS:

In a large pot cover ham bone with 2 quarts water.

Bring to a boil- add the peas, onion, celery and carrots.

Add seasonings, reduce heat to medium low and cook for about 1 1/3 hours.

Remove the ham bone. Let cool and remove the meat left on the bone.

Chop the meat slightly and return to the soup.

Cook for another 30 minutes or until soup is thick.

    Serve with crackers or croutons.
