Haley's Hot Tamale Pie



Haley's Hot Tamale Pie Recipe is a family favorite. It's a quick and easy recipe that eliminates the hassle of corn husks in tamale making but delivers the delicious tamale taste.

Meat Ingredients:

  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup green olives, drained and chopped
  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp chili powder
  • Dash of black pepper and red pepper
Cornmeal Mush Ingredients:

  • 2 tsp salt
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup corn meal

DIRECTIONS:

  • Place olive oil in large frying pan
  • Add onions and cook slowly until translucent; not brown.
  • Add green pepper, tomato sauce and olives.
  • Add meat. Cook slowly on low heat until meat is cooked.
  • Add seasonings and combine thoroughly.
  • Cool and layer with cornmeal mush which is made as follows.
  • Bring water and salt to a boil.
  • Place corn meal into boiling water, stirring until thickened.
  • Allow to cool slightly. Layer with meat in a 2 1/2 quart baking dish.
  • Top layer should be cornmeal mush.
  • Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.
  • Serves 8.
